Last week, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a critical report with one major suggestion: cut carbon pollution as much as possible, as fast as possible.

On the same day as the report was published, the Global CO2 Initiative at the University of Michigan, in collaboration with our international research partners and supporters, hosted an all-day workshop in Brussels where we officially launched our Techno-Economic Assessment and Life Cycle Assessment Toolkit (TEA/LCA). The TEA/LCA provides the foundation to analyze and measure the impact of carbon utilization technologies and ensure we can effectively deploy and scale them globally.

Aims of the Guidelines

  • Define a common language and assessment practice
  • To increase comparability of both LCAs and TEAs
  • Increase transparency of methodologies and data used
  • Help practitioners avoid common pitfalls
  • Build upon existing ISO standards and conventional chemical engineering practice for specific application to CCU
  • Be useful to practitioners at all levels

We at the Initiative are committed to establishing this key framework that will support the CO2 technology industry and meeting our common climate goals.

Our launch event brought together industry leaders, academics, and government representatives. With over 85 participants, the collaborative event included panel discussions with experts and presentations explaining the Techno-Economic Assessment and Life Cycle Assessment guidelines with proven examples.

Thanks again to our team of researchers from Technical University of Berlin, RWTH Aachen University, the University of Sheffield, and Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies

Potsdam for helping develop this critical toolkit that will evaluate and standardize the industry, positioning carbon utilization technology for maximum growth potential.

The Global CO2 Initiative at the University of Michigan is prepared to transform this liability into an asset and provide long-term benefits to our climate.
